After two weeks of glorious vacation, I am back in Denmark. Being back in the US was less of culture shock than I anticipated. Before I left, I was seriously worried about not being able to walk anywhere. Once I got back to the US and spent literally most of my first day back in my car, that concern completely disappeared.
I had the opportunity to catch up with many lovely people. The fun part was, they all asked me similar questions: “What do you like best about Denmark? What do you miss the most about the US? What do you like the least about Denmark? When do you think you will come back?”. I didn’t really have good answers at the time but upon reflection, I think I have answers now.
What do you like best about Denmark? I live in a cool town that is a short walk or bike ride from the harbor, the downtown canal district, etc. I am lucky to live next to the beautiful botanical gardens and a 5 minute walk to a super cute coffee shop. And, I can walk everywhere I need to go.
What do you miss most about the US? I miss driving. I know- it is weird and a complete contradiction to my point about walking… But I do. There is something about being on US highways with the sun shining and the radio on. I obviously also miss the people. I have amazing amazing friends and family. While striking out in a new place has allowed me to meet new people and make new friends, I still have friends in the US that will fly 3000 miles or drive 4 hours each direction to hang out with me. How awesome is that?!
What do you like least about Denmark? This is a negative question and I try not to be negative in this blog… (note the use of the word TRY!!!!). Even with making friends and staying social and active… it is lonely. However, this has (and will continue) to provide me with the opportunity to get good at being alone. It is a strange thing but so many of us are rarely alone. I understand that it requires a fair bit of practice so I am honing my skill set.
When do you think you will come back? My honest answer is that I have no idea. I know I need to start applying for jobs and grants and have a next step planned ASAP. But it is hard to know what to do next and where to start. But I guess the sky is the limit?
