Testing Thermal Limits

Not my thermal limits! (Although- those are being tested too. It promises to be -3C and snow again tonight.)

I am halfway through my second week and am practicing all of my experiments before my fresh specimens arrive.

Part of what I am looking at during my time here in Denmark are the critical temperatures for different species of insects. I have done this in the past by pulling vials in and out of water baths, or making painstaking observations over hours and hours in the field. But what I have taken a picture of is the fancy set up we have here. It allows us to put individual vials in the rack, submerge them into a ramping water bath and make observations through the side of the tank. It is the most efficient way I have ever made these observations!

If you are asking why it is yellowish- that is because it is diluted antifreeze so we can go below freezing. Just like the temperatures outside…
